I don't know how it works exactly. But what it does is...shred the essence of whatever's put into it. Angels have a lot of essence as these things are measured so the process takes quite a while. I wasn't even all the way dead when I came to Court, though I was as good as since the process had already been started on me.
As for what it feels like, it hurts. I can't...describe it in words.

It might be at this point, because she's gone back to nuzzling his neck now that he seems actually rather uncomfortable with it in contrast to pain, and her hands are kneading into his chest and shoulders again. Quietly, she makes a soft little purr of contentment against his skin and dots a few kisses along the nape of his neck. ]
[Barakiel is actually desperate and freaked out enough to actually risk crossing Cecil. The minute he feels her dropping kisses along the nape of his neck he takes action, shoving the first thing he can get his hand on into his mouth in the hopes of changing something.
It's a vanilla cupcake, fortunately, so that solves the hot-and-bothered problem, at least. But he's still stuck in this unnervingly squishy human body.]
[ Cecil stills for a moment at that, a little caught off guard, and she contemplates the situation briefly before she continues kissing along his neck, even as he's notably more composed. ]
But is also only listening with half an ear as he keeps searching for some other foodstuff to eat that might save him from continuing badtouching but that's neither here nor there...]
[ Yeah, Cecil is definitely displeased. She narrows her eyes and picks him up by the scruff of his neck, giving him a little shake to emphasis her annoyance. ]
