  • Lucifer rebels, Lucifer's army is cast down to hell, tense war/detente between Heaven and Hell ensues.

  • In this universe, though, Heaven and Hell are multi-dimensional or whatever and fighting for control over humans existing in multiple worlds. They use vessels (magically treated human corpses) to appear as, interact with, and influence humans of varying worlds.

  • Over time Hell became more chaotic and might-makes-right but they were still bureaucratic in their own . . . corrupt fashion. Heaven meanwhile became more and more uptight and about order and conformity and all those things.

  • A long time ago but still quite a while after the Fall, Barakiel was an angelic agent who really believed that order = good but was nonetheless the rebellious type, which he justifed with a martyr-like "be bad for the greater good!!" philosophy. He was loyal, just kinda unruly.

  • Eventually he was deemed too much of a risk, kidnapped and tortured, and covered in tracker/control magic whatsits, and then used as a secret tool against other unruly angels (some of them also put into the same position as him), demons, humans, etc.

  • He became increasingly cynical and apathetic and resigned to being a tool forever as time passed and he gained a more nuanced understanding of the war. He also gained a frenemy in the form of a Very Old demon named Furtur, which was kinda nice.

  • Then one of his superiors fucked up and used Barakiel as a scapegoat. Not allowed to and rendered incapable of speaking in his own defense, Barakiel was quickly accused of the crime and sentenced to execution.

  • Spent a few millennia suffering and slowly dying because angels don't die easily until he, well, died (or in the case of Court, happened upon an option to leave.).

  • Throughout previous stints in Court, Barakiel slowly began to get attached to mortals against his inclination, making some bad decisions in the process, and realized that maybe he isn't okay with just dying after all.

Once upon a time Barakiel was a naive rebel who really BELIEVED!! in the system and it took a long time for him to come to terms with being betrayed by that system. He spent a long time bitter and angry and full of rage, and then slowly lost the cans for the amount of passion and energy that required and now here he is. Barakiel towards the end of his life was pretty cynical and apathetic, pretty much resigned to being a tool forever. He wasn't even that surprised by how his death came about. By the time the whole scapegoat debacle went down, he was mostly concerned with seizing whatever scraps of enjoyment he could get out of his life.

Those scraps were few and far between, though once Barakiel finds something that makes him feel slightly less miserable he clings to it with all his might. As a result, he tends to focus very narrowly on the few things he genuinely enjoys and that make him happy. In a way, that focus ties into the fact that Barakiel does retain some tiny bit of ground down, extremely self-deprecating rebelliousness, a kind of emotional "fuck you" to his life that doesn't really shout "fuck you" so much as vaguely mumble it under its breath where it can't really be heard probably. But it's still there. The combination of "cling to what makes you happy" and "mumble-mumble-fuck-the-system-maybe-I-guess" means that he has developed a bit of a troll-y streak since he does take some enjoyment out of getting a rise out of his various superiors - even though he can't do anything more substantial against them.

Beyond that, though, there's really not much to Barakiel's life. Even though he was more or less mired for life in the Cosmic War of Heaven and Hell, his apathy was so total that he eventually lost interest and investment in even that - and given that the war dominated his life, everything else kind of paled in comparison as well. The same lack of interest applies to the humans who tend to be screwed over by the cosmic warring and so forth. Not that he has a particular hatred for humans or anything, he just doesn't particularly care about or seem anything special about human lives. He tends to be selfish in the sense of keeping an eye out on how to best preserve what peace he can get; stay out of conflict, stay out of sight, lay low.

In his heart of hearts, Barakiel does long to be free, but he's pretty much resigned himself to the fact that that's never going to happen and it would take a lot for him to really believe that he complete, totally free of his restraints. He views his life as a sad and slightly pathetic one; stuck in unpleasantness, clinging to a few petty foibles to keep himself from being slightly less miserable than he could be, still not quite dead enough inside to give up on his silly token rebellions (you'd think he'd have learned after a few millennia, after all).

objective:
Acquire rose-themed object: Barakiel likes rose-themed things. This is a general sort of objective that will prompt him to try to do things that earn silver (participate in events, get a job, hit other objectives) and generally interact with people. All while rewarding him with warm fuzzies and more silver for more rose-themed stuff.
